Ucheldre in Holyhead, Anglesey, is an arts centre based in the unique and beautiful former Le Bon Sauveur convent chapel which it saved from destruction 30 years ago. The diverse programming weaves together two major strands: performers and artists of international standing bringing high-quality arts to Anglesey, and community events nurturing the creativity of local people. The 150 seat Main Hall performance space is home to concerts (baroque to rock and new music), drama (local Rep and huge variety of touring shows), light entertainment, film (catholic mix of mainstream, international, British (including Welsh), independent), alternate content screenings (ROH, NT, Met, pop concerts), and literary events, with a 130 seat amphitheatre for outdoors events, and frequently changing exhibitions in the Gallery. For larger gigs there is standing room for up to 450 people, and the acoustics are outstanding with the original chapel space providing a stunning setting for events. Ucheldre is host and facilitator of the annual Anglesey Arts Forum’s SeeMôr Film Festival. Other spaces facilitate a busy workshop programme for children and adults and Ucheldre is home to various clubs and activities including Ucheldre Rep, Academi, Rhwng, Literary Society, Mindfulness, and Reading Group. There’s also the Ucheldre Kitchen restaurant, shop and gardens – including a newly created wildlife garden and an extension to the walled garden with its sculptures and water feature. An important part of Holyhead’s cultural life, Ucheldre is frequently used by visitors to nearby Snowdonia, and travellers by ferry to or from Ireland. Easily reached along the A55 and by mainline railway, with a direct commercial flight from nearby RAF Valley to and from Cardiff. Ucheldre is currently working on the Development Stage to create Space for 21st Century Creative Well-being and offer enhanced facilities to be ready for the next 30 years.

Ucheldre is an arts centre which programmes a huge range of events and activities. It is ideally acoustically suited to music, but over the past 30 years there has probably not been an art form not shown or performed in Ucheldre. Performances are often linked to workshops. Programme weaves together two major strands: performers and artists of international standing bringing high-quality arts to Anglesey, and community events nurturing the creativity of local people. Stage also incorporates a revolve which adds great flexibility to the performance space.
