Priorities for Culture - Statement

Creu Cymru Welcomes the Publication of the Welsh Government’s ‘Priorities for Culture’.

Creu Cymru warmly welcomes the announcement made by Jack Sargeant, Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership, regarding the publication of the 'Priorities for Culture' which includes the allocation of an £8 million strategic capital investment fund to the Arts Council of Wales. This significant investment is a testament to the Welsh Government's commitment to nurturing and sustaining the arts sector in Wales.

For many years, Creu Cymru has been advocating for increased funding and support for the arts. We believe that this strategic capital investment will play a crucial role in enhancing the infrastructure and resources available to arts organisations across Wales, enabling them to thrive and continue to enrich our communities.

The publication of the Welsh Government’s ‘Priorities for Culture’ outlines three main priorities: Culture brings us togetherA nation of culture, and Culture is resilient and sustainable. These priorities, supported by 20 ambitions, reflect a comprehensive vision for the future of culture in Wales. We are particularly encouraged by the emphasis on culture's ability to strengthen community bonds and promote inclusivity.

Recent reports, such as our own Sector Snapshot Report, highlight the acute challenges and remarkable resilience of the arts sector amidst ongoing financial pressures. Additionally, the Culture, Communications, Welsh Language, Sport, and International Relations Committee's report, 'A decade of cuts: Impact of funding reductions for culture and sport', underscores the critical need for sustained investment in the arts. The Future Generations Commissioner's call for a Culture Act further emphasises the importance of embedding culture within public services to ensure equitable access for all.

The arts are not just a source of entertainment; they are a vital part of our cultural identity and social fabric. They contribute to our well-being, foster creativity, and drive economic growth. This investment will help ensure that the arts remain accessible to all, fostering a vibrant and inclusive cultural landscape.

To ensure the success of this initiative, it is essential to develop a comprehensive implementation plan. This plan should outline clear objectives, timelines, and responsibilities, ensuring that the strategic capital investment is utilised effectively and efficiently. We call on the Welsh Government and the Arts Council of Wales to engage with stakeholders in the creation of this plan, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the process.

We urge all stakeholders, including arts organisations, community groups, and cultural leaders, to join us in this endeavour. By collaborating and sharing resources, we can ensure that this investment reaches its full potential. Let us work together to create a thriving arts sector that benefits everyone in Wales. Your support and active participation are crucial in making this vision a reality.

We look forward to working closely with the Arts Council of Wales and other stakeholders to maximise the impact of the Priorities for Culture. Together, we can build a resilient and dynamic arts sector that reflects the diversity and creativity of Wales.

Creu Cymru extends its gratitude to the Welsh Government for recognising the importance of the arts and for taking this bold step to secure their future. We remain committed to advocating for the arts and supporting our members in their invaluable work.
